योगश्चित्तवृत्तिनिरोधः ॥२॥
yogaś-citta-vṛtti-nirodhaḥ ||2|| [RS] 1.2 When you are in a state of yoga, all misconceptions (vrittis) that can exist in the mutable aspect of human beings (chitta) disappear. [JW] 1.2 Yoga is the restriction of the fluctuations of mind stuff. [SS] 1.2 The restraint of the modifications of the mind-stuff is Yoga. [p3] [TD] 1.2 Yoga is the ability to direct the mind exclusively toward an object and sustain that direction without any distractions. [p149] [EB] 1.2 Yoga is the stilling of the changing states of the mind. [p10] <Page 1.1 Page 1.3>
JHT: RS is again more interpretive. JW has a long 5 pages of commentary and
explanation.
The modifications are restrained, not eliminated. Is there unmodified mind-stuff? How is the mind-stuff different than the mind? There are thoughts (citta) and then modifications (vrtti), is there an unmodified state of thoughts? |
(योगः, yogaḥ) = yoga
(चित्त, citta) = all that is mutable in human beings; thoughts (वृत्ति, vṛtti) = thought-wave; mental modification; mental whirlpool (निरोधः, nirodhaḥ) = to find tranquility; to control |
